"Beware the Ides of March!"  This was the warning the Soothsayer gave to Caesar in Shakespeare's play Julius Caesar.  But Caesar decided to go to the capitol that day and we know that was a bad decision on his part.  Remember that famous line as he looked into the eyes of his trusted friend..."Et tu, Brute!"  Sorry friends, once an English teacher always an English teacher.  I did read to celebrate today you can enjoy a glass of wine and offer a toast to Julius.

Jeff's Sewing Station

Jeff will be at the shop this Friday, March 19.  Please bring your sewing machines to me by Thursday.  If you brought your machines to me the last time,  they are ready and I shall call you when they arrive.  I am asking that either write the shop a check or bring cash when you pick up your machines.

On-Point  Part 3

This is the final installment of setting your blocks on point.  Last week I gave you the formula for the side triangles.  Today I shall give you the formula for the corner triangles.  You will be using the same "magic number" 1.414 and using the finished size of the block.  Let's work with a 6" finished block for our example:

Divide 6 by 1.414 = 4.24
Round up to 4.25
Add 7/8" or .875 to 4.25 = 5.125 or 5 1/8"
Cut two (2) square 5 1/8" and cut on the diagonal 1 time to equal 4 triangles
And that is all there is to it.

Of course just like last week if you want to cut that 5 1/4" you can, knowing that you will have a little trimming to do when it is added to your quilt.

When I set on point I usually put my first row together with the side triangles and then I put on one corner triangle.  This allows me to see the layout easier.   I hope these little lessons have taken out some of the fear of setting a quilt on point.  Of course, if you need help I am only a phone call away.

New Fabric

This must be a literature newsletter.  The new fabric this week is Anne of Green Gables from Riley Blake.  I ordered a sweet little panel.  When you look at the picture you will notice it has a few "cheater" squares in it so the patchwork is done.  I ordered three fabrics to go with it. I shall border it out with two of the fabrics and the third is perfect for the backing.

I plan to work on this panel this week and by idea will be to make a triple border with the green in the middle and the plum on either side.  Then at the corners I will do a simple 9-patch and it will be done.  Don't you think this would make a great gift along with a copy of the book?

Well, that's about it for this week.
