Good Monday morning, everyone!

I bet you are wondering why you are receiving this in the morning and not the afternoon...because I am writing it Sunday night and then scheduling it to be sent to you.

TUESDAY, MARCH 9

Remember Janet will be at the shop on Tuesday at 11 to pick up and deliver quilts.  Do you have anything that needs to be long armed quilted?  See you then.

QUILTS ON POINT - PART 2  SIDE TRIANGLES

Last week when I told you that the Free Pattern of the Month is set on-point I also told you I would help take the worry out of determining the size of the side triangles and the corner triangles.  I gave you the decimal equivalent for measurements because you will need it for this formula. (1/8= .125; 1/4=.125; 3/8 = .375;1/2 = .50; 5/8 = .625; 3/4 = .75; 7/8 = .875 and 1=1)  So let's get started with the formula.

For both the side triangle and the corner triangles we are going to be working with the FINISHED SIZE of the square.  Remember the square before it goes into your quilt will be 1/2" larger.  For example and 12" finished block with measure 12 1/2".  Let's work with this number first to determine the side triangles.  Do you have a calculator handy?

Step 1Multiply the FINISHED SIZE of your block by 1.414....12 x 1.414 = 16.986

Step 2Round that number up and add 1.25 (1 1/4)....17 + 1.25 = 18.25

Step 3:  Cut a block that size and cut on the diagonal twice (X) to produce 4 side triangles.

That is all there is to it!  But let's walk through that step one more time.  This time I am going to use the size of the square in this month Free Pattern.  The FINISHED SIZE of the block is 7.5 (7 1/2").

Step 1:   7.50 x 1.414 = 10.605  Even though it looks like I should round up to .625 I am going to go up to the nearest 1/4.  So I am rounding up to 10.75.  I just hate to work with 1/8" measurements!

Step 2:  10.75 + 1.25 = 12

Step 3:  I would cut my square 12" and then cut it on the diagonal twice for get my 4 side triangles.

Next week we shall do the corner triangles.

THEY'RE HERE!

In last week's newsletter I told you I had ordered towels from All About Blanks!  They arrived on Tuesday and we have been having fun with them ever since.  These towels are great for machine and hand embroidery, applique or simply add a fabric accent at the end.

These two (2) are the basic solid towel.  They are 100% cotton, measure 18 x 24 and have a hanging tab in the upper corner.  As the All About Blanks web-site says..."The possibilities are endless on this one."  I ordered Ecru and Oatmeal and hope to get in white soon, but the oatmeal is my favorite.  These basic towels are $3.99.

This next group is Vintage Gingham in three (3) colors; Navy Blue also called "Cowboy Blue", Cucumber and Turquoise.  These towels are also 18 x 28, 100% cotton and have a hanging tab in the corner.  The Vintage Gingham are $4.99.

Then I decided to get a little fancy and ordered Hemstitched Guest Towel in Oatmeal.  On the All About Blanks web-site the fabric is described as a  "very raw, natural fiber so be prepared for shrinking and ironing."  Pre-washing is recommended before embroidery as they are 55% linen and 45% cotton.  These towels are 16 x 24 and would make a nice gift plain or with embroidery.  This towel is $5.49

So far I have machine embroidered on the linen towel and on one of the cucumber vintage gingham towel.  I liked the results of both and you can see them at the shop.  I shall also post pictures of the towels on the Pine Tree's Facebook page on Thursday!

I decided to trim the basic towels with fabric.  Karen used the same technique on the towels as we do when making pillowcases.  That way there are no raw edges showing on our towels.  These will also be pictured on Facebook.  I will write the directions and measurements for the fabric and that will be free to you when you purchase the towel.

NEW FABRIC!!

This is new fabric from 3 Wishes!  This line of fabric is called "Patriotic Summer" by Beth Albert.  All yardage is $10.99.

Patriotic Village

Patriotic Flour Sack...Wouldn't this be great in an apron?

Patriotic Stars...Karen used this to trim one of the Oatmeal Towels.

What are your plans for the week?  I was looking forward to beginning a counted cross stitch Stitch Along (SAL) with Frosted Pumpkin Stitchery called "Cozy Cafe".  I have never participated in a stitch along before and had ordered and received my aida and floss, but will now have to wait until March 25 to start because kits were delayed in the mail and they wanted everyone to start on time.  Have you ever stitched or quilted with a group on Facebook?

I am sure I shall find something to do this week.  LOL

Make sure you watch for next Monday's Newsletter or you will not know how to cut your corner triangles for an on-point quilt.

Have a Piece-full Week
